The Blue Heron

Women’s Foundation

At The Blue Heron Women’s Foundation, we believe the world wins when women receive the loving, healing birth they deserve.

Yet for many, access to skilled, compassionate midwifery care is out of reach due to financial barriers - and disproportionately inaccessible for women of color.

We're here to change that. Our mission is to ensure that no woman is denied the care she needs simply because she can’t afford it.

This commitment began with our board member, Darlene Curtis, in her Washington midwifery practice where she accepted Medicaid and provided one free birth each year to a family in need. Her daughter, Brianna Curtis—now Executive Chair of the Foundation—took this commitment even further, offering one free birth every month during her time as the practice owner.

Today, that legacy continues in Texas through The Center for Birth, where two free births per month are sponsored by The Blue Heron Women’s Foundation. However, Texas Medicaid reimbursement rates fall far below the actual cost of prenatal and birth care, making this vital work difficult to sustain without community support.

Our nonprofit operates as a Public Benefit Corporation, specifically created to serve women in need—particularly those in underserved communities, including women of color and refugees. Through donor contributions and community partnerships, we help cover the cost of midwifery care and the many associated services that promote holistic wellness. This includes sonograms, lab work, birth assistants, supplements like prenatal vitamins, chiropractic and massage care, and childbirth education.

Midwives at The Center for Birth generously donate their time to this mission. We also partner with organizations serving high-risk populations, opening our birth center for their use and showing up as part of the "village" that every family deserves.

Each quarter, we spotlight a family in need, giving donors the opportunity to make a direct impact—or to contribute to our general fund, which supports families across Fort Worth. Whether you're covering a prenatal visit or funding an entire birth, your gift helps bring equitable, empowering care to more women in our community.

Together, we can create a world where every woman is seen, supported, and celebrated in her journey to motherhood.

How we give back

The WIN Iniative

The W.I.N. (Women In Need) Initiative is our sponsored birth program dedicated to providing compassionate, skilled midwifery care to women who would otherwise go without. Through this initiative, qualifying families receive full or partial support for prenatal, birth, and postpartum services. W.I.N. reflects our belief that every woman—regardless of income—deserves a safe, supported, and empowering birth experience.

Community Events

Community Events are at the heart of our mission to build connection and support among women and families. We host monthly meet-ups, sponsored baby showers or blessingways, and cozy coffee chats with midwives and caregiving professionals. These gatherings foster education, empowerment, and the village every family deserves.

Partnerships

Partnerships allow us to extend our impact by collaborating with organizations that serve women with specific needs. We open our birth suites and connect our providers to trusted groups supporting vulnerable populations that they understand best. Together, we create a stronger, more inclusive network of care.
